Our Approach

Our Methodology

Due Diligence

Source One's commitment to research as the foundation of our recommendations is by no means limited to the asset classes and products in which we invest your money. We insist on researching our clients too. We believe that it is imperative that we know our client. We spend a great deal of time analyzing what it is that our client is trying to achieve in terms of investment return.

Our due diligence extends to assessing income, tax status, plans for retirement, meeting schooling fees and other aspirations. We aim to identify these life goals with a view to building flexibility into our asset allocation recommendations. This approach ensures that the client has access to liquidity as and when the need arises.

Our diligence knows no boundaries — from evaluating entire sectors right down to the minutiae of monthly management charges levied by mutual funds and pension providers — nothing is left to chance or considered irrelevant.

Source One believes that this commitment to Due Diligence is at the centre of our enviable client retention statistics and our robust roster of referrals.

Accurately identifying the investment objectives and goals, asset allocations and the appropriate asset classes to be used for each client are absolutely critical to long term success. Source One never loses sight of the fact that the money we are managing belongs to you. Therefore, we believe it is imperative that you understand and are comfortable with every portfolio strategy that we formulate and implement.

Risk Mitigation

Source One does not attempt to sugar coat the realities of investment; to do so would be to insult the intelligence of our clientele. We accept that every investment involves some degree of risk and it is essential that clients realize that the complete elimination of risk is not possible.

The loss of principal or loss of purchasing power exists in every investment opportunity, even though it may not be immediately obvious. While risk cannot be avoided, proper diversification within asset classes and across asset classes can significantly moderate risk in a sensibly and rationally constructed investment portfolio.

At Source One, the mitigation of risk is about optimizing the balance between freedom and control. Our approach to risk management is multi-disciplined and has a profound impact upon the way in which we construct and manage diversified portfolios.

With a team of market analysts, industry specialists and business outlook forecasters continually identifying risks and opportunities, we can help get the balance right.

Source One's approaches include the transference of risk to a counterparty, avoiding the risk altogether or hedging the risk elsewhere in the market.

Source One maintains effective capital preservation practices which serve to protect your investments against a wealth depletion event. These practices represent an additional layer of protection for your investments.

Profit Realization

Source One understands that clients naturally want to realize profits as soon as they become available but we aim to balance this innate desire with sensible measures that aim to mitigate taxation liabilities that could impact upon those profits.

It is Source One's duty to ensure that profit realization attracts as little taxation attention and, with this in mind, we bring the experience of our tax specialists to bear upon potential liabilities.

Of course, our initial consultation with you will have identified potential taxation issues but as tax legislation is all-too prone to amendment, we always ensure that a thorough analysis of the investment is conducted prior to realization and advise you accordingly.

Following discussion with you, Source One may recommend the reinvestment of unrealized profits into asset classes that have become under-represented within the portfolio, with a view to re-balancing its overall profile and, of course, negating any tax issue.

Research & Analysis

Why is it so important?

To many, the perception of the financial markets tends to evoke images of young, brash individuals surrounded by banks of computer monitors and with a telephone receiver firmly secured to each ear and, certainly, there are many institutions where this breed can be found. What is not always appreciated, however, is the work that goes on behind the scenes. A trader is only as good as the analytical research he or she bases trades upon. This analysis is absolutely crucial to the success of a trading strategy and investors discount them at their peril.

All Source One's investment strategies are the result of relentless and meticulous research.

We identify and invest in sectors that are set to prosper from underlying economic conditions.

In keeping with our blunt refusal to follow the herd, we continually ask ourselves where the crowd is NOT investing. Where our competitors see doom and gloom, we search for opportunities. Where they see a "sure thing", we look for signs of over-buying. This is not to say that we are strictly contrarian in our approach but, often, when everyone is piling in at the top of a market, it is usually a sign that the smart investors should be getting out.

Having the confidence and expertise to seek out the winners of tomorrow allows us to stay ahead of the market.

Our researchers ask themselves if a prospect company represents the best exposure to a particular sector. Searching for cheap companies, per se, is seldom enough. We identify cheap companies, yes, but the price must be complimented by excellent management, outstanding assets, strong balance sheets and eminently sustainable competitive advantages.

In making recommendations we use chart-based technical analysis to optimize our entry into a stock or other asset at an opportune point within a trend. This helps our clients minimize downside risk while maximizing the upside. Put simply, we like to invest with the trend. Timing is everything !

Fundamental analysis takes a more clinical perspective by examining aspects like earnings — projected and actual, EBITDA, financial statements and even geo-politics.

Whilst others tend to use either fundamental or technical analysis to recommend stocks, at Source One, we have found that two disciplines are better than one in helping us to recommend the best value shares at the best possible price.
